Hi, I’m Carlos Gabriel Aguiar Hernandez—or just Carlos Aguiar for short! I’m originally from Empalme, Sonora, Mexico, a small town that some jokingly call a “pueblo bicicletero” (bike town).
My childhood was filled with bike rides on dusty streets, soccer games with friends, and a few rounds of Nintendo and arcade classics. After earning a degree in business administration, I began working at the Sonoran Institute of Educational Infrastructure, where I discovered how energy efficiency could make a real difference. That was my first step into the world of sustainable energy. From there, my career took me to the Energy Commission of the State of Sonora, where I dived headfirst into energy efficiency and renewable energy projects. The more I learned, the more passionate I became. That passion eventually led me to Arizona State University, where I earned a PhD in Sustainable Energy. Grad school wasn’t just about academics; it was a transformative experience that reshaped how I see the world and what I want to contribute.
These days, I’m proud to work as the City Energy Manager for the City of Phoenix. I focus on clean energy solutions, reducing carbon emissions, and making energy more equitable for everyone. It’s fulfilling work that aligns with my belief that sustainable energy is the key to a better, more just future. Outside of work, my life is full thanks to my amazing wife, Martha, and our two dogs, Bron and Laca. They keep me grounded and remind me of the simple joys—whether it’s exploring new places, walking the dogs, or just relaxing at home. Life with them is my happy place.
